Florence Mila Borchert
Big Cat Country
One of the most exciting recent events at the Zoo was the unveiling of the newly redesigned and renovated Feline Building. Now titled the Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country, this magnificent new home for our felines officially opened July 16, 2005. The 16,000-square-foot building was one of several capital campaign projects funded in part by the Zoological Society, private donors, Milwaukee County and the Zoo.
Big Cat Country features the following species: African lion, cheetah, Amur tiger, snow leopard, jaguar, hyena and red panda. All of the exhibit areas for these animals were expanded and upgraded to include more realistic and natural habitats. Freshly painted murals, new rockwork and skylighting greeted the feline residents, and behind the scenes, the dens and animal management and care areas were also renovated.
