Matschie’s Tree Kangaroo

(Dendrolagus matschiei)

Native to: The Huon Peninsula of northeastern New Guinea
Primary Diet: Leaves, fruits and flowers
Adult Weight: 15 to 17 pounds
Status: Endangered
Matschie’s tree kangaroos prefer to walk instead of hop. They have a long, cylindrical tail, which serves as a counter balance to their body, helping them maneuver dangerously tall trees. They sleep 60% of the day.
