Gila Monster

(Heloderma suspectum)

Native to: Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico
Primary Diet: Rodents, frogs, lizards, birds’ eggs, insects, centipedes and worms
Adult Weight: 3 to 5 pounds
Status: Near Threatened
The Gila monster is one of few venomous lizards that spend up to 95 percent of its time in underground burrows. Fat stored in its oversized tails allows the Gila monster to go months between meals.
