Bartlett
Society
The Bartlett Society is an international society of individuals with an interest in the history of zoos, aquariums, and wild animal husbandry. It is named in honor of Abraham Dee Bartlett (1812-1897), a nineteenth century Superintendent of the London Zoo (1859-1897). Clinton Keeling and others founded the Society in England on 27 October 1984 (the birthday anniversary of A. D. Bartlett). Soon after this, a branch in North America covering the United States and Canada began. A related society also exists in India - the Society for Promotion of History of Zoos and Natural History in India and Asia. The British, North American, and Indian groups each publish their own newsletters, and the British group publishes an annual journal. British (including International) membership has a dues structure and an annual meeting. North American membership is free, but there is no annual meeting (NA membership includes the NA newsletter and copies of the British newsletter). Contact the appropriate individual for each group to obtain more information or to become a member.
