Zoo’s Groundhog, Wynter,
Decides to Take Day Off Due to Blizzard

Wynter to take Groundhog Day off

Due to the forecasted blizzard for today and tomorrow, the Zoo’s resident groundhog, Wynter, will remain off-exhibit in her indoor quarters February 2, Groundhog Day.

Zoo staff decided to cancel the Groundhog Day ceremony due to the weather; and Wynter will remain comfortable in her exhibit inside the Animal Encounter Building where she has made a comfortable “nest” from straw, newspaper, phone books and packing paper. Zookeepers report she is doing just fine, choosing to awake at certain times throughout the day to eat her favorite foods like Romaine lettuce and apples, and forgoing her usual food of rodent block.

Visitors are invited back next year to the Zoo’s Groundhog Day ceremony when hopefully Wynter will predict an early spring!
