The Zoo Welcomes New Baby Alpaca

(July 2011)

Baby alpaca born July 6

The Zoo would like to welcome a baby female alpaca, born on July 6. The baby will be named in the near future.

Alpacas are social animals that live in herds in the Andes Mountains, at elevations ranging from 11,500 to 16,000 feet, so they are accustomed to harsh climates. They also have a three-stomach system to help in the digestion of varieties of plants.

The baby’s mom, Eleanor, has four white “socks” and the baby has two white “socks.” Keepers said it is interesting that the baby looks so much like its mother. This is similar to how last year’s baby, Enrique, looked like his father, which does not happen often.

Keepers report that the baby is usually on exhibit and is mostly nursing, but is beginning to taste alfalfa and herbivore pellets. She likes to race around the yard, but, like any baby, gets tired and enjoys her quiet time.

The baby gets a good reaction from the crowd, keepers said, because she is so cute! So be sure to stop by and see the new baby alpaca!
