Happy lies in the Hippo Haven beach area which is three times larger than the former exhibit. The underground filtration room for Hippo Haven is 7,500-square-feet. The filtration system will save 20 million gallons of water annually, as the hippo pool is no longer drained and re-filled daily. Hippo Haven pool water goes through three filter systems: the monoscreen which separates the feces and presses out liquid, sand filters to separate smaller waste and particles, and the ozonater which disinfects the water.
