Curator positions at the Milwaukee County Zoo require a college degree and experience for the appropriate specialty (e.g. ornithology, herpetology, mammalogy, primatology). An advanced degree is preferred. In addition, three years of experience in the care and exhibition of the specialty animals with one year in a supervisory capacity is minimally required. Management experience is also preferred. There is no County residency requirement to apply for this position. Each year positions are available for summer help at Heritage Farm, where domestic and wild animals found in Wisconsin are presented to the public. For the position of Heritage Farm Attendant, six months of animal experience with animals other than personal household pets is required. Emphasis is placed on public speaking ability and experience in giving animal information to children and adults. Applicants are required to be residents of Milwaukee County and at least 18. Applications for both seasonal (approximately Memorial Day through Labor Day) and full-time positions are available from the Department of Human Resources, room 210, Milwaukee County Courthouse. Zoo veterinarians at our Zoo require as a minimum a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, completion of an approved residency or internship program in zoological medicine or three years of clinical experience in a zoo or wild animal park, and eligibility to possess a veterinary license in Wisconsin. There is no County residency requirement to apply for this position. At our Zoo, a degree in zoology or a closely related field is helpful, but not necessary, for Zookeeper applicants. Extensive experience with the care of animals receives much more weight during the selection process. Experience with a wide variety of animals, large and small, is a plus. A minimum of one year of experience with animals other than personal household pets is required, but additional experience is preferred.
