This was the year that the Zoo first charged an admission fee. Also this year, Samson the gorilla reached his maximum weight of 652 pounds.  Samson was put on a diet and trimmed down to a svelte 532 pounds.  His current weight was a favorite topic of discussion for Zoo visitors.
