At age 71, Ernst Untermann became director of Washington Park Zoo, serving until 1940, when the mandatory retirement age of 75 was established. A jack-of-all-trades, he had been a sailor, economic lecturer, editorial writer, geologist, and painter. His hobby was studying prehistoric animals. He was particularly interested in the educational possibilities of the Zoo. Untermann favored keeping animals in conditions as natural as possible. Also in 1935, Sultana the polar bear, at this point a grandmother, bore her last cub. Image courtesy of Milwaukee Journal |
